ON SWITZERLAND’S LAKE GENEVA THE STAGE WAS SET LONG BEFORE SAOTA, A SOUTH AFRICAN BASED ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN FIRM, WAS COMMISSIONED TO BRING THEIR INTERNATIONALLY SOUGHT-AFTER AESTHETIC TO THE SHORES OF LAKE GENEVA. Known as Les Tourelles, which translates to “the turrets,” the property’s name is derived from two small towers adorning the stone bathhouse, built directly over the water in the early 19th century by Countess Catherine de Bruc. Today, it remains a timeless hideaway, where one can take a swim as boats pass by, with the snow-capped Mont Blanc in the distance. Yet despite its history, as you walk the sloping path up to the residence, one is quickly transported to modernity. In a setting like Lake Geneva, where luxury is practically the norm, the challenge was in creating a wholly original design that adheres to the well-established lifestyle. Guided by an Afro-Euro motif, the architects conceptualized a home that simplifies the connection to its surroundings with a roof that extends over a large terrace to provide shelter. Doing so, SAOTA relied extensively on the use of glass walls along the water side and sculpted the footprint into the undulating land, resulting in a dwelling that holds more than meets the eye. Passing through the embossed stainless steel door at the entry, a grand salon with soaring ceilings and glass walls immediately sets the tone with a sense of openness that permeates throughout. Nearby, a spiral staircase wraps around a glass elevator, fluidly connecting the multiple levels. Custom made African Nguni rugs grace Jerusalem marble floors in the salon, with a fireplace and freestanding chimney that hangs from the ceiling to provide unique visual appeal and complement the unobstructed backdrop of lake and mountain views that change with each season. Set side-by-side, the kitchen and dining room are separated by a wall of wood and glass that allows for easy communication between rooms, while maintaining an element of privacy. Glass doors in the dining room open to a swimming pool and the roof-covered terrace overlooking the water. A sheltered outdoor living area of grand proportion, it is this interaction between the interior spaces and how they seamlessly open up to the exterior that the architects cite as the essence of the Afro-Euro aesthetic. On the second level are two bedrooms and a master suite, positioned in the corner of the structure with two walls of glass. A bathtub made of black Nero marble in the master bathroom offers the perfect vantage point to take in Lake Geneva. Connecting the main house and the annex, a subterranean level holds a tranquil spa area with an indoor pool, sauna and steam room, as well as a 15-car garage, conference room, and lounge. Located nine kilometers from downtown Geneva, Les Tourelles stands as one of the most inspired residences in an internationally renowned destination.
